NEWS: Fundraising is child’s play

Prince Bishops Shopping Centre opened the doors of its children’s stay and play facility last week to support the Macmillan Cancer Research Big Coffee Morning campaign.

The Little Bishops Play Palace invited parents and toddlers to its coffee morning and a free play session with all proceeds being donated to Macmillan Cancer Support. The event, which took place on Friday 26 September, raised £206.77 for the charity.

Caroline Atkinson, from Belmont in Durham, and her daughter Martha, aged 14 months, were among the many people who supported the event. Caroline said; “It was a great idea to hold the coffee morning in the Play Palace, I was able to enjoy a coffee and cake and chat to other parents while Martha happily played.”

Macmillan’s fundraising manager, Michelle Muir said: “We want to make sure no one has to face cancer alone but we can't do it without the amazing people who fundraise for us and Prince Bishops Shopping Centre is one of them.

“Sadly the number of people being diagnosed with cancer is increasing every year. Recent statistics show that in County Durham alone, over 10,000 are living with cancer; to put this in to context this amount of people would fill Durham Cathedral ten-times over. This means Macmillan’s support for people living with cancer is in more demand than ever.”

Richard Toynbee, centre manager of Prince Bishops Shopping Centre, said: “It’s the third year in a row that we have supported this event and we are grateful to the people who joined us to raise funds for this worthwhile cause.”
