NEWS: Singing in the rain
Despite the rain this Sunday (10 August), children in Durham were in good voices when pirates and princesses invaded the Prince Bishops Shopping Centre.
The weather did not stop the little pirates and princesses getting dressed up and singing their hearts out with some of their favourite characters.
Grace Elizabeth Carter, aged 5 from Langley Moor got to meet and sing a song with Snow White and Captain Jack. “Snow White is my favourite princess; she’s lovely and kind and has a beautiful voice”, said Grace, “but Jack Sparrow is a scary pirate.”
Grace’s mum, Tracy Carter, said “she’s been really looking forward to meeting the princesses all week and I don’t think a bit of rain has spoiled her day. She’s had a great time and enjoyed making a tiara, getting her face painted and joining in the songs and games; she’s already planning what outfit she will be wearing next week.”
The event is the first in a series of four that are taking place across August.
For the next three Sunday’s, children are invited to take part in a range of different activities and meet many of their favourite characters including; Rapunzel, Pirate Jake, Tinkerbell and the Snow Princess.
Richard Toynbee, centre manager of Prince Bishops Shopping Centre said, “There’s no escaping the popularity of the film Frozen at the moment, and I know how much my son loves Jake and the Neverland Pirates, so we thought it’d be a nice idea to hold some pirate and princess events across the summer holidays.”
“Although our first event has been slightly dampened by the Great British weather, the children were able to take refuge from the rain in the Little Bishops Play Palace and they all seemed to really enjoy themselves - which is what it’s all about.”
The next three events take place on Sunday 17, 24 and 31 August, between 12-4pm. Alongside crafts, face painting, treasure hunts and themed photo booths, children can take part in princess etiquette lessons, pirate boot camp and singing, dancing and drama classes.
