NEWS: Whisky River to hold fundraising night for stray dogs in Romania

Sisters, Hollie and Kate Shepherd are organising a fundraising evening to raise money that will go towards rescue dogs facing certain death in Romania.

The sisters who own and run Whisky River Cocktail Bar and Café in Prince Bishops Shopping Centre, will host the evening on Wednesday 24th February at Whisky River presented by entertainer and singer David Ball with special guests North Road, winners of the 2013 Metro Radio’s The Big Audition. There will also be a raffle with some great prizes, a quiz, “guess the tipple” (over 18s only) and some canine-inspired cocktails.

The event hopes to raise awareness and cash for local rescue centre, Tendercare in Burnhope which Tracey Hobbs runs from her home. Tracey from Tendercare said “A volunteer who works with me at the rescue centre was volunteering in Eastern Europe over a week last summer and brought home to me the plight these animals are facing and it’s heart breaking. We have been involved ever since and this February we are bringing 19 dogs and a cat from Romania . The cost is around £3,000, around £175 per animal.”

Monies raised on the evening and in continuous collections at Whisky River will go towards vet bills, food, bedding and also to fund travel so more dogs can make the journey to the UK for the chance of a loving home. Kate Shepherd said: “I had never heard of Romanian Rescue Dogs - why rescue dogs from Romania when we have so many homeless strays in the UK?  After chatting with Tracey at length, I learned of the abhorrent mistreatment and abuse these dogs have experienced and continue to receive in Romania.

Tracey has a number of dogs in her care that have made the journey from Romania and are looking for loving homes.  Being a dog owner myself this is a cause close to our family’s heart, I couldn’t believe how well behaved and affectionate these dogs are.  For anyone looking for a dog to join their family - I strongly recommend they pay Tracey a visit.”

Monies raised will go towards vet bills, food, bedding and also to fund travel so more dogs can make the journey to the UK for the chance of a loving home.

The Fundraising evening is being held at Whisky River Cocktail Bar and Café from 7pm on 24th February.
