On Tuesday 13th November, Prince Bishops Shopping Centre will be showing its support and commitment to Purple Tuesday an accessible shopping day that will be celebrated all across the UK. Created by the organisation Purple, Purple Tuesday is the UK’s first accessible shopping day, established to increase awareness of the needs of those who require a more accessible shopping experience.
In support of Purple Tuesday 2018, Prince Bishops will be conducting Purples own accessibility audit to help us ensure we continue to provide an accessible environment for all members of the community. We have already reviewed and updated the centre's accessible website pages, providing clearer and more detailed information better highlighting both the centre and retailers accessible features, making it easier to plan your shopping trip before you arrive at Prince Bishops.
We have many features already in place at Prince Bishops Shopping Centre and across our car parking facilities that support accessible shopping. We have lifts to all floors of the car park and shopping level, these lifts also provide convenient access for those wishing to reach the riverside from street level avoiding steps and steep pathways. We have 22 accessible parking bays, accessible bathrooms, help and assistance points located around the centre, inside the lifts and parking machines, as well as regular visual patrols from our security and service team.
Centre retailers New Look, H&M, Boots and Next are each fitted with their own internal lifts, allowing improved access to many products and services. Braille menus are available in Costa Coffee, and a large number of stores are equipped with hearing loops and accessible changing rooms. Staff at TSB are also specially trained to offer banking services to more vulnerable customers, who may find banking more of a challenge. O2 can offer a SignVideo service for deaf or hard of hearing customers that communicate through British Sign Language as well as helping customers implement their phones accessible functions.
The Shopmobility Durham Team will be highlighting their many services during the week of Purple Tuesday, you will find them at shop level in our main lift lobby area. Shopmobility Durham is permanently located at Prince Bishops on the ground floor of our centre car park, and here you can access motorised scooters, and both manual and power-assisted wheelchairs to use across the length and breadth of Durham City as well as our shopping centre. Friday Shopping Service is one of their new initiatives providing door to door accessible transport allowing people access to all the facilities of Durham City Centre.
